Oh Happy Day!

Today has been so good! Class this morning was wonderful and I'm learning so much. In Practice with Individuals and Families we talked about the assessments and interview we completed for class. I learned why legal issues and religion are important items in an assessment. As we discussed these things my Professor told us of a situation in which people carried out activities under the table so to speak. This decision that they made to brush their mistake under the rug instead of owning up to it impacted peoples lives greatly. She shared with us that in her years in social work the game never changes only the players do. Unfortunately there are going to be people that we work with who aren't always truthful or own up to their mistakes. Then she asked us this question, "What rules are you abiding by?" in other words how will we choose to "play the game" will it be with integrity?

Later in interviewing class we discussed Letters By a Modern Mystic. In the book, it presents this idea of a game in order to make God apart of every minute. More specifically it's goal was to think about God for one second of every minute during the day. For our class we had to try it out. The whole class we shared with each other our experiences trying out the game. Some people showed success while others and most of us shared the challenge we had with it. We talked about how it's not what we do but how we do it. For example, turning a boring task like paper filing into an important way to pray for people as their papers were sorted. Another instance would be when with someone who makes you angry or frustrated or who annoys you begin to pray for them. Because in praying for them we lose our selfishness and begin to see them the way God does. In social work there are going to be people I can't help or who don't want or accept my help but it's okay. We can be okay with it because we know we live in a fallen world. However, we also know that Jesus' has already won the victory. Therefore, when we live every moment in Jesus' name everything becomes okay.
