David's Legacy

Earlier this evening I was writing a paper when I came across another with a similar topic. I thought about posting it here then, but I wanted to finish my assignment first. I was reminded about posting after I read my devotional this evening. In the devotional it states, "The Spirit of God has important things to teach you, but you can only learn these lessons in the midst of your trials." - Experiencing God Daily by Blackaby & Blackaby. It continued by saying not to resent the suffering that God allows in your life or to plan your living around pain. If God did not spare his son, how can we expect him to spare us? We need to learn obedience even in suffering. This devotion fit in perfectly with what I had written in that paper...
"One of my favorite role models from the Bible that further demonstrates what is important to me is David. David is my role model because he was a man after God’s own heart. He demonstrated faith in God when he decided to fight Goliath (1 Samuel 17). David has shown me to keep faith and trust God’s promises even when the situation seems impossible. Reading through the Bible, it is easy to see that he was a servant of God. When no one else had the courage to fight Goliath, David stepped up and said to King Saul “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him” (1 Samuel 17:32). In fact, David’s good character shined throughout the kingdom. In 1 Samuel 22:14 it says “Ahimelek answered the king, “Who of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household?” Not only was David a faithful servant of God he was also a loyal friend. When David began working, as a harp player for King Saul, he met the King’s son Jonathan and they became good friends. The Bible even says that Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as much as he loved himself (1 Samuel 18:3). When King Saul and his son Jonathan died, David wrote a lament for them and ordered the people of Judah to learn the lament (2 Samuel 1:18). David also searched for someone from Saul’s house to show God’s kindness too (2 Samuel 9:3). When he found Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, David took him under his care and gave him all of the land that belonged to Saul on behalf of Jonathan (2 Samuel 9:7). In this act, David demonstrated deep love for his friend, loving Jonathan just as much as he loved himself.
In everything, David worked hard and obeyed God. I seek to be a faithful servant and a good friend like David. I want to serve God with my all so that people remember me for my obedience to God over anything else. Additionally, I want to be a person who treats my friends as good as I treat myself. This is the legacy that David leaves, to seek after God and remain faithful to Him because God keeps his promises." - From Philosophy of Life Paper by Hillary Bartoszek
