Obedience Outlasts Heroism

In Judges the story of Sampson has an important message for us as believers. This lesson is that obedience to God outlasts heroism. God raised up Sampson as a Hero, a judge for the Israelites. However, when Sampson strayed from God's route on the map he ended up with a bad hair cut. Oh, and the Holy Spirit left him, the Philistines captured him, gouged his eyes out and forced him to entertain guests as a freak show. In the end, Sampson shouts for God to give him a last bit of strength to push over the pillars in order that all the people would know the God of Israel is sovereign. God grants his request and Sampson dies killing more in his death than in His life. Needless to say, Sampson gave up his pride and gave glory to God for his strength. At this point, Sampson knew he messed up and wanted to make it up to God, he overcame the world by faith.

1 John 5:3-4

3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  (1 John 5:3-4, New International Version, ©2011)
